Ihram — Do’s and Don’ts

What is allowed and what is not allowed while in the state of Ihram, explained simply.

Umrah Guide 2 min read

Once you make the intention for Umrah or Hajj you are in the sacred state of Ihram. Certain things become restricted until your Umrah is complete. Knowing them in advance helps you avoid mistakes.

What you should do

  • Make the intention clearly and recite the Talbiyah often.
  • Keep your thoughts, words and actions gentle and patient.
  • Use unscented soap, shampoo and toiletries.
  • Men: wear the two white sheets and sandals that leave the top of the foot uncovered.
  • Women: wear loose modest clothing; the face and hands stay uncovered.

What is not allowed

  • Using perfume or scented products.
  • Cutting hair or nails.
  • Men covering the head or wearing stitched clothing.
  • Arguing, fighting or using bad language.
  • Hunting, and marital relations.

Small things pilgrims often ask

  • Can I change my Ihram sheets? Yes, you can wash or change them.
  • Can I use a belt or money pouch? Yes.
  • Can I sleep or shower? Yes — just use unscented products.
  • Umbrella? Yes, shade is allowed.

If something is done by mistake, do not panic — speak to your scholar about any expiation (fidyah) needed.
